FRIENDLY BARRIERS CITY BOLLARDS

2021
This project was developed under the design competion “Friendly Barriers” launched by Perimeter Protection, a company producing highly robust steel bollards. The concept of my proposal which won the competion was to transform safety bollards into sculptural urban planters bringing more green into the cities. The tall pillar form takes inspiration from to the Nordic tradition of elevating flower pots with stands and pedestals. The smooth and bulky expression aims to soften the harsh look bollards usually have and gives them an unexpected feeling of warmth and playfulness.
These planters are intended as outer shells to cover the steel original bollard structure. Suggested manufacturing process: mold casted in Terrazzo.
Terrazzo is a composite made of recycled industry scrap chips of marble, quartz, granite, glass, tiles and other suitable material, it can result in many different colors and patterns. My proposal is a family of three sizes that can come in different stains of color, opening possibilities for a multitude of combination.
Recycled Plastic Alternative
I envision the planters to be casted in recycled plastic as well. The finish can be monitored by the combination and proportion of different color ships. This alternative is also highly sustainable from production and material point of view. Recycled plastic as well as Terrazzo are very durable, require low maintenance and are appropriate for outdoors.
