The word “Agueiro” refers to the powerful rip currents of the Atlantic, a natural force ever-present along the beaches of Alentejo. This collection draws inspiration from these agitated water flows, crafting a dynamic interplay of asymmetry through carpets, table mats, and trivets. Each piece is made from esparto grass, utilizing a traditional braiding technique typically reserved for symmetrical, spiral designs. Here, the technique takes on new life, expressing movement and fluidity.
The sofa-shell rests on a wooden frame, reminiscent of traditional chair construction, ensuring durability and shock resistance. Each level of the sofa is upholstered with foam of varying densities, providing exceptional comfort. The separation between the cushions and the shell allows for diverse fabric combinations, offering playful colour and texture variations, making customization effortless.
This concept was developed for a design competition, in collaboration with my former colleague Luís Silva.
